Five tips for more biodiversity

Every garden, every designer of a small piece of earth can make a contribution to the preservation of plant and animal diversity. How exactly can you do this? Whether you have a garden, a patio, a small balcony or a small plant pot in front of your window - diversity is possible everywhere. Today I would like to give you a few ideas on how you can bring more diversity to your piece of nature.

Creation of habitats for native animal species

1. creation of a biotope

Every pond, no matter how small, offers animals a new habitat. If rubber is used instead of PVC film, fewer pollutants are released into the water, but this type of film is almost three times as expensive, but also lasts longer. A small pond like this can be constructed within a day or two. I would create a deep area for wintering and a wide shallow water area.

Predominantly native plants should be planted in the water and along the banks to provide native animals with food, breeding grounds, hiding places, etc.

2. stone pile or stone wall

Creating a stone wall without mortar or simply piling up stones serves as a refuge for many native animals. Combined with sand and fine gravel in a dry bed, it is very attractive in general.

3. use deadwood

Deadwood in various diameters in a pile or as a Benjes hedge (see article) provides a wonderful refuge for many animal species. This can also be imitated on a small balcony.

4. overgrown corner

Somewhere in the garden, or in a pot on the balcony, you can allow wild growth, which you mow or cut off at most once a year. You can also create a wildflower meadow with native species - however, this is a multi-year project that begins with the selection of wildflower seed mixtures suitable for the location (only available in special stores). Wildflowers can also be grown in a pot.

5. native plants

The same applies to balcony greenery as to gardens - the more native shrubs, perennials and flowers you use, the better for biodiversity. A hedge of native shrubs provides a habitat for many animals.
