Climate protection achievements 2022: Plant research

Climate-relevant achievements in 2022: plant research

They are the superheroes of climate protection, because when it comes to filtering man-made CO₂ from the air and storing it in the soil, plants play a crucial role.

As part of a research project funded with USD 11 million, CRISPR technology was used in 2022 to optimize the process of photosynthesis to make the conversion of CO₂ even more efficient.

Anyone who thinks that's all there is to it is very much mistaken!

Plants are not only CO₂ reservoirs, but also sources of food

Here, too, we are working at full speed on optimization possibilities. The world's population is growing steadily - but the area under cultivation remains the same.

Scenarios that look like science fiction novels are used here.

For example, a study published in June 2022 showed that it is possible to grow edible plants (algae, nutritional yeast and fungi)f completely without photosynthesis.

The first success in growing plants in the dark can be useful for space travel, for example - or for growing crops more efficiently on Earth.

The first experimental greenhouses are also being built on the seabed. All highly futuristic, but certainly conceivable.
