What we need for the future: A sense of reality, hope and speed

Our situation is comparable to a marathon that has to be completed in a certain amount of time. We have overslept the first few kilometers, but a sprint could still save us, is how one of the authors of the UN synthesis report, Prof. Dr. Matthias Garschagen, describes the current situation very aptly, but not without a ray of hope.

Why don't we see the signs of the times more clearly?

If global warming continues unabated, the living conditions for ALL people will deteriorate to catastrophic levels for a variety of reasons.

If the earth continues to warm up, it will be able to bind less and less CO2.

If the Earth continues to warm up, large areas will become uninhabitable - and not just for humans.

If the earth continues to warm up and we reach 2.5 - 3 degrees global warming (in Austria this means de facto 6 degrees), the burden that we are already imposing on our children - not to mention grandchildren - is brutal.

It's time.

Any delay jeopardizes our livelihoods.

Every delay makes us poorer in terms of diversity and biodiversity.

Every delay costs lives.

We have a responsibility for this planet, for our children and for future generations.

Let's accept it.

We still have the opportunity to shape the future together.

Let's do it!

Let the decisions of the coming hours, days, weeks and years be life-saving, future-oriented, hopeful and highly responsible.

The paths we take today will lead to the habitats of our grandchildren - one way or another.

It's not too late. Not yet, but, as Prof. Dr. Garschagen states: "The window of opportunity is closing."

So, let's breathe in the most flourishing, biodiverse, colorful and hopeful vision of a future, take off and run the sprint of our lives.

For the future, for the present and for life itself. 💚
