Climate-relevant achievements in 2022: Climate Protection Act in the USA

Climate protection has now also arrived in the USA.

It is well known that the USA is second only to China in global CO₂ emissions. If emissions were reduced there, we would all benefit.

The US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) came into force in August 2022.

It is considered one of the big political wins for the environment in 2022 and includes investments of 396 billion US dollars in projects that promote clean energy and related technologies such as electromobility.

"Until now, there has been no legislation in the US that has been so groundbreaking in its focus on climate protection," says Richard Newell, CEO of Resources for the Future, a non-profit organization focused on energy research.

 

According to a scientific analysis of the new law, this could mean that it has the potential to significantly accelerate the energy transition in the USA.

With its help, 81 percent of the country's energy consumption could be covered by renewable sources such as wind and solar power by the end of the decade.
