UN Sustainable Development Goal #2: no one has to go hungry anymore

Ending hunger, promoting food security and sustainable agriculture

Shocking, but true: one in nine people on earth goes hungry. In fact, one in four people not only suffers from constant hunger, but also from a permanent lack of vital nutrients. Therefore, the second important goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to end hunger in the world and all forms of malnutrition by 2030 and to ensure sustainable agriculture.

"World agriculture could easily feed 12 billion people. That means that a child who dies of hunger today is murdered."

Jean Ziegler, former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food

Current situation

The lack of nutrients triggers illnesses more quickly, reduces the ability to work and restricts mental performance. Hunger means that the people affected can earn less money because the lack of food weakens them in the long term.

Children are particularly affected. Every 10 seconds, a child dies because it does not have enough to eat. Malnutrition restricts children in their physical growth and mental development.

Although enough food is produced in the world to feed everyone, many people do not have access to food.

While 650 million people (8.4 percent) worldwide suffered from malnutrition in 2019, the figure was between 720 and 811 million people (9.9 percent) in 2020. This was due to bottlenecks in the food supply caused by the coronavirus crisis, income shortfalls, price increases and greater social inequality.

The goals of SDG 2 by 2030 at a glance:

  • Ending hunger worldwide by 2030
  • Stopping all forms of malnutrition by 2030
  • Double agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, especially women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishermen
  • Promoting sustainable agriculture and organic methods
  • Improve agricultural research and investment in rural infrastructure in developing countries
  • Correct and prevent trade restrictions and distortions on global agricultural markets

What to do?

The 17Goals initiative has compiled TU DU's that show us how we can drive forward the fulfillment of this goal in our lives. We have taken inspiration from them and listed a few more possibilities:

  • Eat vegan more often and avoid meat

  • Seasonal and regional shopping

  • Buying food for the needy

  • Save food and prevent waste

  • Only buy fish species that are not overfished, preferably from the region

The climate crisis can only be overcome through interlinked social, economic and ecological measures, a "transformation of the world".
