It's serious, but not hopeless

We give you a simple summary of the UN report on the state of the climate, because it contains statements of immense importance in equally complicated terms.

"We still have it in our hands, but the window is closing"

Climate researcher and co-author of the UN synthesis report Prof. Dr. Matthias Garschagen

What does the UN synthesis report actually say?

This report is intended to give us an overview of the current state of climate research, including technologies and measures to solve the climate crisis.

What is the current status?

  • The consequences of global warming are more drastic than originally expected
  • 10 percent of the highest-income households are responsible for almost half of global consumption-related greenhouse gas emissions
  • We (i.e. the industrialized countries) emit 54% more greenhouse gases than in 1990
  • If we continue to pursue climate policy as we have so far, we will lose the race to the 1.5 degree limit as early as 2030

What do the solutions look like?

  • Renewable energies instead of fossil fuels
  • Improving energy efficiency
  • STOP deforestation
  • Reducing meat consumption
  • Protective measures for ecosystems

That actually sounds pretty simple - it also gives hope that the report clearly states that both the necessary technologies and the financial resources are available to save the situation. Sensible channeling would be required.

pro.earth conclusion:

The consequences of global warming are more drastic than expected.

However, it is not too late to turn things around - solutions are available in every respect.

It is up to us to make good decisions, both in our daily lives and the next time we go to the ballot box. An immeasurable amount depends on the big decisions of the next few years.
