The magic of the cherry blossom and where we can admire it without a long-haul flight

A sea of fragrant pink glory, almost too beautiful to be true, makes spring shine in all its splendor and moves me every year with the same fervor as the first snowflakes.

I am not alone in this, because the cherry blossom, sakura in Japanese, is revered by people all over the world.

It is regarded as a symbol of absolute beauty and vitality, yet is so infinitely fragile and transient.

A natural spectacle that attracts thousands of pilgrims to Japan every year, but why wander far away when the good things are so close.

Cherry blossom in Vienna

On the occasion of Austria's 1,000th anniversary, Japan donated 1,000 cherry trees to the city of Vienna.

This is the reason why some places in the city on the Danube have a Japanese flair.

For example, a cherry grove was planted on the Danube Island, and cherry trees from this donation were also replanted on Mexikoplatz.
