National Park Garden - oases of diversity

In one of the many #Beetschwestern articles, we already mentioned that all the gardens together are the size of a national park. There is an initiative that has now come to our attention that we would like to recommend to you: National Park Garden. Global 2000 and dm have launched it. The idea is that every square metre of near-natural land that is treated WITHOUT pesticides and artificial fertilizers is entered on an Austria-wide map of national park gardens, with the aim of creating a network of biodiversity in gardens the size of a national park. To date, over 5 km2 have been registered, which is around 37% of the Thayatal National Park.

With our gardens, balconies and windowsills, we have the opportunity to make an important contribution to preserving diversity. How can we do this? By growing as many different plant species as possible and offering insects breeding and overwintering opportunities. We have already written a lot about this.

The National Park Garden initiative includes the following criteria for participation:

  • No use of pesticides
  • No use of artificial fertilizers
  • Use peat-free soil
  • Promotion of species-rich habitats for plants and animals

And since we nature-loving gardeners meet all these criteria anyway, we can now enter our balconies, windowsills and gardens on the map as a National Park Garden! Click here for the website! Join in and be part of what we think is a really sensible idea! Your #Beetschwestern
