Is streaming really the new flying?

Who can remember the time before the series marathon?

I'm talking about the time when we eagerly awaited 40 minutes of new developments in our favorite series from week to week. Can anyone still imagine that today?

However, it should be noted that it wasn't that long ago - and somehow it also had its quality. For example, I can still remember certain phases of my life when I watched certain series. The feeling of life and the way they picked me up.

If I had packed the series into a marathon, it wouldn't have been so memorized in me.

The time in front of the TV also had a certain quality, because I devoted my full attention to the content on offer so as not to miss anything, because missed was missed back then. At this point, however, I would like to leave out the potential for conflict that this entailed.

Today it's different - everything is always available, repeatable and can be called up at any time of day or night.

But...

How sustainable are NETFLIX and Co?

Honestly? - Not very.

Admittedly, I haven't given much thought to how good it is for the climate until now when I've been relaxing on the couch and watching movies to my heart's content.

The large CO2 footprint of streaming has several aspects:

📺 The direct power consumption when streaming

📺 The power consumption of gigantic server farms on which everything is stored

"Streaming is the new flying" was the headline in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, illustrating very vividly the enormous energy consumption that we are causing in passing - and the trend is rising.

Now we should seriously ask ourselves: Is this necessary?

Is streaming really so vital, especially as it has only recently become part of our everyday lives?

pro.earth conclusion:

We are living in a really exciting time that forces us to question our daily, ill-considered routines time and again. This can also be a great benefit in terms of making conscious decisions and getting out of the twilight sleep of the mainstream.

This time makes us realize that every step we take, no matter how weightless it may seem, leaves an imprint - it is up to us to decide how much of a burden it should be for future generations. 💚

Finally, a few tips for sustainable streaming:

📺 Form streaming communities and celebrate a movie rather than sleep through a marathon

Stream via Wi-Fi or download videos via Wi-Fi

Minimize the resolution

📺 Watch on smaller devices
