It is obvious that this is about the building materials - but that is by no means all.
By definition, the idea of sustainable building includes the following:
- Choice of property
- Architecture
- Energy
- Water and
- Material efficiency
- resource-saving operation and maintenance
- Waste avoidance
- Right up to possible deconstruction or disposal at the end of its useful life.
That sounds very comprehensive.

Anyone who has ever built a house knows that the decisions that lead to the usually horrendous costs incurred are made on the basis of a wide variety of factors - and these are very diverse. Sustainability may not always be at the top of the list.
